Today we rewind an episode of Diasporic Music originally aired on April 30, 2017, featuring a celebration the 100th birthday of Helen Williams and her granddaughter Imani. Williams born on May 1, 1917 in Gibsland is a town in Bienville Parish in northern Louisiana. She is the author of the book of poetry, "From Birth to Longevity." Imani her granddaughter is currently studying in Norway.

Tribute to a foundation member of the The Main Ingredient. The group was formed in Harlem, New York City in 1964, composed of lead singer Donald McPherson, Luther Simmons, Jr., and Panama-born Tony Silvester. Cuba Gooding Sr. Replaced McPherson, when he died. He scored a Top 10 Pop and R&B smash with their production of Ben E.King's hit "Supernatural Thing" in 1975. He managed True Reflection, a vocal group that produced Glenn Leonard who went to become a Temptation. He also produced the Calypso band from Trinidad and Tobago Kalyan, who recorded in Thunder Sound Recording studio in Canada.

We also pay tribute to Otis Redding on the 50th anniversary of his death.

Redding was on top of the world at the time of his death. He was known as the most popular male vocalist on the planet earth. Redding was so popular in England that he ended Elvis Presley's eight-year reign as the "world's best male vocalist" on Melody Maker's annual pop poll in 1967.

The life and times of Redding is the subject a new book Otis Redding: An Unfinished Life by Jonathan Gould. The volume has been receiving critical acclaim by the corporate and even the so-called alternative press. Rolling Stone magazine's headline read: Epic New Otis Redding Biography Sheds Light on the Singer's Life and Times.

Gould pointed out in his new book, "...no interview or article mentioning him (Otis Redding) ever appeared in Muhammad Speaks." Darryl Cowherd refutes Gould. Says Cowherd: "Simply put that's a lie. Because I conducted an interview with Otis Redding that was published in Muhammad Speaks September 23, 1966 and I have a copy of that published article to substantiate what I'm saying."

Dr. Gerald Horne joins the show again with an edition of the Horne Report, focusing on the crisis in Zimbabwe. He lived there and is the author of the volume From the Barrel of a Gun: The United States and the War against Zimbabwe, 1965-1980, published by the University of North Carolina Press (2000).

This week Diasporic Music hosts Norman "Otis" Richmond (aka Jalali) and Malinda Francis (aka Mali Docuvixen) interview Rochelle Bush. She is a descendant of African American freedom seekers and was born in St. Catharines, Ontario. She is a Trustee and the historian of the Salem Chapel, British Methodist Episcopal Church National Historic Site, which is also the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad site.

He has been the Executive Director of the Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) since 1992. In addition to PAFF, Mr. Babu currently serves as a permanent member of the jury of the annual Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria. AMAA is the world's largest Pan African film awards event, covering the continent of Africa and its worldwide Diaspora.

Tribute to Lauryn Hill who is known as a singer, songwriter, rapper record, producer and actress. However, is deeper than that- she narrated the documentary "CONCERNING VIOLENCE". She is an African who initially rose to fame as a member of the group The Fugees. The band's debut album was "Blunted on Reality".

Second album, "The Score", was a Grammy award-winning, multi-platinum album and spawned the singles 'Ready or Not' and 'Fu-Gee-La' as well as their covers of Bob Marley's 'No Woman No Cry' and 'Killing Me Softly', previously performed by Roberta Flack.

Lauryn's debut solo album was "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill". It sold over 420,000 copies in its first week and went straight to the top of the Billboard R&B Album chart. The single 'Doo Wop (That Thing) was a number one hit in the US in 1998. 'Everything Is Everything' and 'To Zion' were also successful singles from the album. Lauryn received 10 nominations in the 1999 Grammy Awards, winning Best New Artist, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song, Best R&B Album and Album of the Year.

This week we continue with Black August and talk with Herb Boyd, journalist, educator, author, and activist. His articles appear regularly in the New York Amsterdam News. He teaches black studies at the City College of New York and the College of New Rochelle.

We also speak with Douglas Daniels, Professor in the Department of Black Studies and in the Department of History. He received his BA in Political Science from the University of Chicago and an M.A. and Ph. D. in History from the University of California, Berkeley.

Professor Daniels' book publications include: Lester Leaps In: The Life and Times of Lester "Pres" Young (Beacon, 2002); Pioneer Urbanites: A Social and Cultural History of Black San Francisco; and One O'clock Jump: The Unforgettable History of the Oklahoma City Blue Devils (Beacon Press, 2006). Professor Daniels is co-editor of Peoples of Color in the American West.

Tribute to John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 - July 17, 1967)

Trane as he was called always said, "I want to be a force for good." He was an African jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and was later at the forefront of free jazz. The People's Republic of the Congo (1969 to 1991) issued a stamp with Coltrane's picture on it.

Lawrence Hamm the Chair of the People's Organization for Progress (POP) discusses the rebellion that took place in Newark, New Jersey 50 years ago in July of 1967.

Kali Akuno of the Malcolm X Grassroots Organization will discuss the election of Chokwe Antar Lumumba as Mayor of Jackson, Mississippi. Jackson has a history of righteous resistance. It was the home base of the human rights giant Medgar Evers.

Jay Jackson the Great-grandson of Albert Jackson Toronto's first Black postman talks about his legacy. Jackson discusses the police shooting of Garfield Belfon, a Canadian-born African teenager who was murdered by the Toronto police in the 1950s. He also talks about singing at the world-famous Apollo Theater in 1963 with his Toronto-based vocal group, The Pharaohs. They consisted of Eric Mercury, Arnold Winn, Roland Williams, Gary Gabriel and Jackson.

We also interview Dr. Gerald Horne who holds the John J. and Rebecca Moores Chair of History and African American Studies at the University of Houston. Dr Horne discusses The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Brexit, the French election, and South Africa. Tribute to Walter "Junie" Morrison

Walter "Junie" Morrison was an African musician and record producer. He was a member of the Ohio Players in the early 1970s, and later became the musical director of P-Funk. He died on January 21, 2017, at the age of 62. He was believed to have been living in London. His death was reported the following month, but the details remained private. Junie was born in Dayton, Ohio and was always surrounded by the funk and at one moment in history sang in the same baby choir that was comprised of Thomas and William Shelby, future members of Lakeside and Dynasty with Solar Records and eventually, Johnnie and Keith Wilder, who went on to form the mega group Heatwave, signed to Epic Records. Dayton Ohio's, Mayor Whaley and the House of Representatives proclaimed February 24, 2017 "Paul Mooney Day". As Gil Scott-Heron's Uncle Roy Heron use to say, "How U like that ONE?"

Tribute to Phyllis Linda Hyman (July 6, 1949 - June 30, 1995)

Phyllis Linda Hyman was an African singer-songwriter and actress. Hyman had an African consciousness and at one time in history she was a member of the Congress of African People (CAP). She was a member in the 1970s when CAP was a proponent of Black Nationalism and was lead by Amiri Baraka. In later years CAP moved to Marxism-Leninism Mao Tsetung.

Hyman She is best known for her singles from the late 1970s to the early 1990s: "You Know How to Love Me"; "Living All Alone" and "Don't Wanna Change the World".

Hyman was honored by Toronto's anti-apartheid Biko-Rodney-Malcolm Coalition (BRMC) for refusing to entertain in Apartheid South Africa. Hyman was offered $100,000 to perform for four weeks in 1981. She was given a piece of pot created by Jose Garcia a founding member of the Afro American Progressive Association one of the first black power groups in Canada.

Jose Garcia live from Aruba, the birthplace of Maurice Bishop will discuss the history of the Afro American Progressive Association(AAPA). The AAPA was one of the first Black Power organization in Canada. Garcia was a foundation member. The AAPA came before the Black Action Defense Committee (BADC) and Black Lives Matter. El Jones of Halifax Nova Scotia discusses how post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) led Lionel Desmond to murder his 31-year-old wife Shanna; ten-year-old daughter Aaliyah and 52-year-old mother Brenda before murdering himself in Upper Big Tracadie, Nova Scotia. The Antigonish, Nova-Scotia-born Desmond enrolled in the Canadian armed forces in 2004 and was deployed to Afghanistan between January and August 2007. He was diagnosed with PTSD after his tour of duty. During that period, 26 soldiers were killed while serving on Canada's combat mission in Kandahar. He was released from the military in 2015. The couple were in counselling as the pair struggled to deal with their issues.

Musical Salute to Donny Hathaway: Donny Edward Hathaway (October 1, 1945 - January 13, 1979) was an African born in the United States. The Chicago-born St. Louis reared was a jazz, blues, soul and gospel singer, songwriter, arranger and pianist. Hathaway signed with Atlantic Records in 1969 and with his first single for the Atco label, "The Ghetto", in early 1970, Rolling Stone magazine "marked him as a major new force in soul music." His enduring songs include "The Ghetto", "This Christmas", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Little Ghetto Boy", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", signature versions of "A Song for You" and "For All We Know", and "Where Is the Love" and "The Closer I Get to You", two of many collaborations with Roberta Flack. "Where Is the Love" won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 1973. At the height of his career Hathaway was diagnosed by the State as a "paranoid schizophrenia" and was known to not take his prescribed medication regularly enough to properly control his symptoms. On January 13, 1979, Hathaway's body was found outside the luxury hotel Essex House in New York City; his death was ruled a suicide

Ajamu Nangwaya, Ph.D., is an educator , writer and an organizer. He is a lecturer in the Institute of Caribbean Studies at the University of the West Indies. Ajamu has over 25 years of experience in community organizing and advocacy. He is a former Vice-President of CUPE Ontario and served as a term as a Vice-President of CUPE Toronto District Council.

Ajamu lived and worked in the American Southeast for four years while working with the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund. He was a participant at the conference that created the United States Federation of Worker Cooperatives and Ajamu served on its first board of directors.

Ajamu is currently an organizer with the Network for the Elimination of Police Violence. Ajamu writes on topical issues and his writings have appeared in the Toronto Star, Counterpunch, Dissident Voice, Share newspaper, Huffington Post, Global Research,Truthout,Rabble.ca, Briarpatch Magazine, the Black Agenda Report, NOW Magazine and Pambazuka News.

Sudz's latest feature film, Home Again, won the prestigious PAFF‐BAFTA Festival Choice Award in Los Angeles and was recently nominated for Best Direction from the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC). Home Again is the follow up to his multiple award winning and Genie nominated debut feature film Love, Sex and Eating the Bones. Sudz is developing two new feature films, Operation Red Dog and Colour Blind. He is currently in pre-production on 'Shoot the Messenger,' his first Dramatic series co-created with writer/producer Jennifer Holness airing on the CBC.

Sudz directed The Phantoms, which won an International Kids Emmy. He also won a Canadian Screen Award for Best Direction for the TV movie as well as garnering a Director's Guild of Canada Best Direction nomination. The Dream Street Pictures project aired in Fall 2012 on CBC.

Sudz also co-created his first television series, the half-hour comedy She's The Mayor with Jennifer Holness and Min Sook Lee. He also wrote and directed several episodes. The show received numerous critical nods and is distributed by BBC WorldWide.

Previous to this, Sudz was involved with the feature film Toronto Stories, an anthology in conjunction with three other directors and was invited to TIFF for September 2008.

Sudz also co-wrote and directed the dramatic miniseries Guns for CBC based on four families caught up in illegal gun trafficking. Starring Colm Feore and Elisha Cuthbert, Guns won five Gemini Awards including Best Writing and Directing for Sudz.

Sudz also wrote and directed the triple Gemini award-winning (Best Direction, Best Supporting Actress, Best Television Movie) Doomstown, an MOW for CTV/Sarrazin-Couture.

Sudz's episodic television directing work includes: Syfy Network's Haven CW's Reign, Beauty and the Beast, CBC's Cracked, numerous Murdoch Mysteries, Heartland and Wild Roses.

These athletes have won marathons in London, New York and Berlin, and have set countless world records. But some of Kenya's top runners aren't running for fame and fortune. Some are wanted warriors, running for their lives. For years, Julius Arile and Robert Matanda thrive among the roaming bands of warriors that terrorize the North Kenyan countryside. By the time they reach their mid-twenties, stealing cattle, raiding and running from the police is the only life they know. So when both warriors suddenly disappear from the bush, many of their peers assume they are dead or have been arrested. Instead, they trade in their rifles for sneakers-in the hopes of making it big as professional marathon runners. Years of fleeing from the police have prepared the men for running marathon distances, but do they have what it takes to overcome the corruption, mistrust and jealousy that threaten to derail their careers? On July 26, 1953, 135 young revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro boldly assaulted the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba, the country's second-largest military fortress, while two smaller groups led by Abel Santamaría and Raúl Castro targeted important adjacent buildings. Though the Moncada Barracks did not fall, the revolutionary action was highly significant. It signalled the future battles that were to triumph in 1959 when the Cuban people celebrated the defeat of Fulgencio Batista's brutal dictatorship. As Fidel declared later, "Moncada taught us to turn setbacks into victories."

Jalali interviews Mississippi native Charles Burnett, a film producer and director, writer, editor, actor, photographer, and cinematographer. His most popular films include Killer of Sheep (1977), My Brother's Wedding (1983), To Sleep with Anger (1990), The Glass Shield (1994), and Namibia: The Struggle for Liberation (2007). Burnett has been involved in other types of motion pictures including shorts, documentaries, a TV series and made-for-television movies, including Oprah Winfrey Presents: The Wedding (1998).

Born in Dallas, Texas, Billy Woodberry is an independent filmmaker who has taught at the School of Film/Video and the School of Art at the California Institute of the Arts since 1989. His feature film Bless Their Little Hearts (1984) is an essential work of Los Angeles cinema, informed by Woodberry's familiarity with Italian neo-realism and the work of filmmakers in Cuba, Brazil, India and Africa. It won the Interfilm ecumenical jury award at the Berlin Film festival. Woodberry has appeared in Charles Burnett's When It Rains (1995) and provided narration for Thom Andersen's Red Hollywood (1996) and James Benning's Four Corners (1998). Woodberry's two-hour video, The Architect, the Ants, and the Bees, was part of "Facing the Music," a 2004 group exhibition, video and multimedia installation at the REDCAT gallery documenting the building of the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the transformation of downtown Los Angeles. His work has screened at the Camera Austria Symposium, Harvard Film Archive, Human Rights Watch Film Festival and Museum of Modern Art. Woodberry also works at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.

Musical salute to Eric Allan Dolphy, Jr. (June 20, 1928 - June 29, 1964). Dolphy made his contribution to jazz music as a multi-instrumentalist. Dolphy was also the first important bass clarinet soloist in jazz, and among the earliest significant flute soloists. He worked closely with John William Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Chico Hamilton and other jazz greats.

We paid tribute to Pamela Maynard, the Canada-based Guyanese singer, who succumbed to a long battle with breast cancer. She was one of Guyanas singing icons who was versatile in Reggae, Gospel, Soul, R&B, Calypso, Jazz and Soca.

The family and friends of Jesse Belvin have big plans after all these years. Belvin was the first African American to be nominated on the first Grammy Show. We talk with Jeanette Baker, great niece of the legendary Josephine Baker, and an accomplished star of stage, screen, radio, and television in her own right. She introduces her new music and talks about her petition to place Jesse Belvin into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

We put the musical spotlight on accomplished musician Van Cephus. Cephus was a member of Chapter 8 (Anita Baker and Producer Michael Powell) and appeared on their first album. He also played on Randy Crawfords "Knocking On Heavens Door", featuring The Winans and The Clark Sisters. This recording can be heard on the soundtrack of the film "Lethal Weapon 2". Mayfield would have celebrated his 70th birthday on June 3rd. Curtis Mayfield, along with Fred Cash and Sam Gooden sang at a "Free Huey P. Newton" Rally in Oakland and he visited Angela Davis at her request when she was imprisoned.

Malcolm was born 87 years ago on May 19, 1925. While it is unlikely that U.S. president Barack Obama will acknowledge this, people from Cape Town to Nova Scotia and Brazil to Brixton, London definitely will. Archie Shepp linked Malcolm X with John Coltrane. He said: "I equate Coltrane's music very strongly with Malcolm's language, because they were just about contemporaries, to tell you the truth. And I believe essentially what Malcolm said is what John played. If Trane had been a speaker, he might have spoken somewhat like Malcolm. If Malcolm had been a saxophone player, he might have played somewhat like Trane." Malcolm X created the Organiztion of Afro American Unity and the Muslim Mosque, Inc. after he departed from the Nation of Islam. Africans at home and abroad like Archie Shepp, Dennis Brown, Miriam & Mbongi Makeba, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Leon Thomas, Pharoah Sanders and others have dedicated music to Hajj Malik Shabazz.

We also talk with Rupert Charles Lewis, the author of "Walter Rodney's Intellectual and Political Thought". Lewis is an expert on Marcus Garvey who will discuss the Red, Black & Green flag, Garvey's use of the press and his relevance to this period. August 13th is the 90th anniversary of the origin of the Red Black and Green flag.Lewis' others works on Garvey are "Marcus Garvey:Anti - Colonial Champion", "Garvey: His Work and Impact" and "Garvey: Africa, Europe, the Americas".

“My identity is very clear to me now, I am a Black woman.” - Lena Horne

My life’s work as a journalist/broadcaster has made it possible for me to meet many of the towering figures of African and world history. I was fortune enough to have crossed paths with Lena Horne on more than one occasion.

One of our encounters took place at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. I was there to attend a press conference for Ms. Horne. J. Alexander Francis was also there as a photographer. Francis hails from the Caribbean, and I from the wilderness of North America. Other than the two of us, the room was white on white in white.

Ms. Horne suddenly appeared, accompanied by Blues icon Jimmy Witherspoon and the Royal York’s P. R. man Gino Empry. When Ms. Horne entered the room she slid straight to “Chocolate City” and embraced Francis and me, the only other Blacks in the room. While I had grown up a fan of Ms.Horne, this display only cemented my love for her and her work. I have never forgotten Ms. Horne’s demonstration of Black solidaritary.

I was saddened to learn that Ms.Horne has recently joined the ancestors on Mother’s Day, May 9th. She died in a New York City hospital less than two months shy of her 93rd birthday. Her career spanned a remarkable 65 years. She was an enchanting singer, actress and human rights activist.

The span of her life is itself significant. Born June 30, 1917, two months after the United States entry into World War I, and four months before the Bolshevik (Russian) Revolution, Ms.Horne lived through the Depression, the Second World War, the Chinese and Cuban Revolutions, the birth of the Cold War, the eruption of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, the Vietnam War, the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union, and the election of the first African president of the United States, Barack Obama.

She was known for her plaintive, signature song “Stormy Weather” and for her triumph over the bigotry that allowed her to entertain white audiences but not socialize with them.

She is best known to many for her marvelous roles in the films “Cabin in the Sky” and “Stormy Weather”. “Cabin in the Sky “is a musical that was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and released in 1943. The film also starred Ethel Waters and Eddie “Rochester” Anderson of Jack Benny fame. Ms.Horne co-starred as “Georgia Brown” in her first and only leading role in an MGM musical. Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington and his Orchestra have a showcase musical number in the film.

“Stormy Weather” is loosely based upon the life and times of its star, dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. Robinson plays “Bill Williamson”, a natural-born dancer who returns home in 1918 after fighting in World War I, and then tries to launch a career as a performer. Along the way, the character Williamson woos a beautiful singer named “Selina Rogers”, played by Ms.Horne.

Unlike many 21st Century Superstars, she was not afraid to be seen in public with leaders who had been deemed “enemies of the state” by the State. “There is no business like show business”, and it is currently a cesspool of opportunism.

Involved in the freedom struggle

Ms.Horne knew both Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. and El- Hajj Malik El- Shabazz (Malcolm X) and spoke fondly about both of them. Her take on King was, “Every color I can think of and nationality, we were all touched by Dr. King because he made us like each other and respect each other.”

She was unapologetic about her support for Malcolm X. Says Ms.Horne, “Malcolm X raised my consciousness about myself and my people and other persons I know. I knew him before he became Malcolm X.” Before there was Martin and Malcolm, Horne had befriended both Dr. W.E. B. Du Bois and Paul Robeson. She was at an NAACP rally with Medgar Evers in Jackson, Mississippi, the weekend before he was assassinated.

Ms.Horne’s stella career had an international impact. The Cubans had produced a hard-hitting short film called “Now”, which was based on a song that Ms.Horne had recorded in the beginning of the 1960s. The song had been banned in 1964 in apartheid South Africa, along with Randy Weston’s album Uhuru Afrika. The prohibition had made international headlines and was covered in a September 1964 issue of Downbeat magazine.

Ms.Horne’s striking beauty often overshadowed her talent, and she was remarkably candid about her feelings on this matter. “I was unique in that I was a kind of black that white people could accept,” she once said. “I was their daydream. I had the worst kind of acceptance, because it was never for how great I was or what I contributed. It was because of the way I looked.”

She might have become a major movie star, but she was born 50 years too early. Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, and others have benefited from Horne’s pioneering contribution to the arts.

Segment #1: El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) would have celebrated his 85th birthday on May 19th. He was assassinated 45 years ago on Feb. 21, 1965. Ossie Davis referred to Malcolm X as "Our Black Shining Prince". Malcolm's mother and father met at a UNIA convention in Montreal. They were married in Montreal, Quebec, Canada 10 May 1919. His mother Louise Helen Norton was born in 1897 in La Digue, St. Andrew, Grenada and died in 1991 in Woodland, Michigan. She lived 26 years longer than her son. His father Earl Little was born in Reynolds, Georgia in July of 1890, and was assassinated in Lansing, Michigan on Sept. 28, 1931. Wilferd Littte, Malcolm’s oldest brother says, “The story of her life was an epic one. The epic began in Grenada, continued in Canada, and ended here in the states. In all three countries there are parts of her life waiting to be resurrected.” Malcolm visited Toronto before he was assassinated. He spent time at the home of writer Austin Clarke and his wife Betty. Segment #2: Spotlight on Faith Nolan. Faith Nolan is an artist who is also a community builder. She is presently the director of Sing Elementary Teacher of Toronto and is in the process of founding a music therapy course for women prisoner in an Ontario jail. She has founded three Toronto based choirs, Sistering Singers, Mandela Children¹s Choir, and Voices of Freedom. In the late eighties she founded and directed Kingston Women Prisoners Choir. In 2004 Faith was on the Board of Mayworks, Toronto. She created Joint Effort in 1991. She was a founding member of the Black Women¹s Collective 1984 and Our Lives Newspaper 1986, Sisters Café 1991, MWIC in 1983-present, WRPM record distribution in 1995, Camp SIS 1995- present. She was on the Board with Charlie King, Pete Seeger in 1987 of the PMN. She is a composer and guitarist whose style varies from blues and folk, to jazz, with a taste of funk and reggae, is a seasoned performer who has built a strong and faithful audience.

Segment #3: Tribute to Ron Banks, William "Wee Gee" Howard, Elbert Wilkins, Lenny Mayes and The Dramatics. Ron Banks' silky falsetto helped give the Dramatics one of the most enduring careers in R&B. The Northern High School graduate was the founder of the Detroit vocal group, which made a name in the mid-'60s and went on to play for avid audiences around North America. Aside from a short break in the mid-1980s, the group has worked continuously since. William "Wee Gee" Howard shared leads with Banks on "In The Rain," "Thank You For Your Love," "Fall In Love, Lady Love," and "Hey You! Get Off My Mountain." Actually, Howard dedicated "Hey You! Get Off My Mountain" to the Toronto police department, when his set of Dramatics performed in Toronto. He felt he was unjustly harassed by Toronto's finest. Howard and Elbert Wilkins left the Dramatics and had a second set for a number of years. Howard was replaced by L.J.
