Black Panther Party founder and leader Huey P. Newton was assassinated in Oakland, California on August 22, 1989. Local and national media slandered Huey as a criminal. The Uhuru Movement immediately launched a campaign that turned the tide on public opinion, forcing the media to acknowledge Huey's stature as an heroic leader of the Black Power Movement of the 1960s. Shortly after Huey's assassination, the Uhuru House in Oakland held an event to honor Huey's life and contributions to the worldwide African liberation struggle. African Socialist International Chairman Omali Yeshitela delivered this keynote presentation to a full house.
