"Uhuru Brothers and Sisters! I'm gonna put it to you raw, I'm that political Sista. Regardless of Stand Your Ground, it's time that Black people stand our ground!" said Daphne Jackson at a rally on 63rd St. Bongo Beach in Chicago on July 16th.

The rally was in response to the Saturday night verdict of not guilty for George Zimmerman in the stalking and cold-blooded murder of unarmed 17-year-old, Trayvon Martin, in Sanford, Florida.

Across the country, numerous rallies were held in protest to the ruling in the Zimmerman trial. However, in Chicago, activists spoke of the relationship between the State and violence against the African community.

African Internationalism places the ruling in the context of colonialism, a system that requires an on-going state of violence against the oppressed African nation on behalf of the white oppressor nation.

"It has been well over 400 to 500 years that Africans are murdered by systemic white power, be it in the form of the police, vigilantes, or whomever...We have been murdered, raped, ravaged, imprisoned, lynched, mugged, tortured, anything economically under them, anything that you can name that can happen to anything or anyone has been done to African people," said Daphne.

Daphne is member of the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement - Chicago chapter. She also serves as the International Director of Information and Education for the organization.

"The violence that killed Trayvon is colonial violence...We are a colonized people...This system is slapping you, your mother, your father, your kids, your sisters and y'all won't say nothing," said Daphne flanked by other members of the organization.

"The African petit bourgeoisie can not lead the struggle for our Trayvon. Your Al Sharpton's and Jesse Jackson's...that white face in the black masks that are used to pacify our people from true struggle and liberation. The main problem is that the masses of African working and poor people are not organized under our own self-interests and revolutionary leadership. We have to build organizations. We have to build self-determination," concluded Daphne.

Bongo Beach is an area where many different Africans come to enjoy the park music and food.

Participating organizers supporting and present were: NCOBRA, The Amos Wilson Institute, Fred Hampton Jr. and the POCC, Willie Fleming Jr. and the Anti-Eviction Campaign Chicago, SNIC, Occupy The Southside Freedom School and THA People's Place.
